Ingredient Spotlight: Oats

I don't know how I could have forgotten this one in my Ingredient Spotlight series! For those of you with red, irritated, flaky, dry, oily......okay basically oats are incredible for all types of skin, they're beautiful for the body, they're milky in the bathtub...seriously just try them.

Here's the deal:

Apparently, oatmeal is a beautiful remedy for acne. Take a little bit of rolled oats (the plain kind, no flavors or additives!) and add lukewarm water, then apply it to the breakout. Leave for a few minutes, then rinse. It calms redness and irritation and takes down swelling!

It's used in soothing dry and irritated skin.  Oats can be used in a bath (just drop your oats into your hot bath water) for soothing sunburn, dryness and itchiness, or apply oatmeal to bug bites for relief of itching and uncomfortable swelling. You can do this with your puppies, too :)

Similarly, add a tablespoon of honey, 2 cups of oatmeal and a cup of milk to your bath for a beautifully antibacterial, moisturizing, rejuvenating bath.

To be honest, one of my favorite uses for oatmeal is as an exfoliant. I swear by the Queen Helene Oatmeal and Honey Facial Scrub. It's super inexpensive at your local drugstore, and I've found it to be incredibly toning, clearing, moisturizing, and smoothing. Also it smells like a sugar cookie so how could I complain? Basically they grind up the oats to almost a powdery texture and mix it with honey for a creamy, sweet-smelling scrub. Honey is naturally antibacterial and hydrating while oatmeal is soothing and scrubby, so you get all the beautiful effects from one cleansing scrub!

There are tons of DIY recipes for oatmeal scrubs, baths, masks...mix it with banana for hydration or with honey and cinnamon for a deep-cleansing acne fighter. Let me know if you try any, I'd love to hear your results!
Until next time, beauties!
